Black and Gray

Black and Gray Tattoos in West Palm Beach

Black and gray tattooing builds an image out of black ink and diluted grey wash alone — no color, just contrast, depth and bare skin left as the highlight. It is the style I have spent most of five years on: realism portraits, ornamental sleeves, religious and surreal work. I tattoo at Wooden Heart Tattoo in West Palm Beach and take clients from Boynton Beach and Lake Worth.

The process

  1. Consultation

We talk through the idea, references, placement and size — in English or Spanish. You leave knowing the session length and the price.

  2. Design

I draw your piece custom for your body. You see the drawing before the session and we adjust until it is right.

  3. Session

Half day or full day at Wooden Heart Tattoo. Clean setup, calm pace, breaks whenever you need them.

  4. Aftercare

You go home with written aftercare and my number. I check in while it heals and touch up if the piece needs it.

Questions

Does black and gray age better than color?

Generally yes. Black and grey wash relies on contrast and shading rather than pigment hue, so it holds its read as skin softens, and it is easier to refresh years later.

Placement and sun exposure matter more than palette — in Florida, a piece you keep covered will outlast one you do not, whatever the color.

How many sessions does a realism piece take?

A palm-sized realism portrait usually fits in one full day. A half sleeve is typically two to three sessions and a full arm sleeve can run up to six.

I space sessions three to four weeks apart so the skin heals completely between them.

Can you work from my own photo?

Yes, and a sharp, well-lit photo is the best reference I can get. I redraw it for skin rather than copying it flat — contrast gets pushed, fine detail gets simplified — so the piece still reads from across a room in ten years.
